KRING Young Professionals Challenge 2022
Dear young colleague, dear dinosaur, dear member of the Kring,
Are you a young professional or student? Are you younger than 35? And are you interested in broadening your horizon and getting to know everyone in the field of coastal engineering? Then this challenge is for you! (If you’re over 35, please see below)
This year's KRING Young Professionals Challenge will be very different than the years before. We would like to test your debating skills to reach a wider, broader public. So not just the technical solutions will be valued, but also the way you tell the story, explain the situation and persuade the public will be scored!
Rather than ask you 4 question, we are going to give you one statement, and you must argue either for it, or against it! And that’s statement is…
“The best way to deal with sea level rise, is to immediately abandon all low lying land and coastal cities”
Your argument should have sound engineering bases, but also consider avoiding hazards, economic damage and benefits, carbon emissions, new technology, social changes, artist impressions, storytelling, narratives. The judging panel will be a mix of non-engineering experts in a range of subjects, so you must be sure your augments aren’t too technical and are very persuasive. You don’t have personally 100% believe in your argument, but your entry must be fully either for or entirely against the statement, there’s no room for middle ground here!
First up we want you to send us an opening statement which will clearly show which side you have taken, and lay out your key points and ideas. This should be about 250-300 words, but the exact nature of this up to you! Make it a video blog, or a magazine article, remember you’re trying to persuade non-engineers! You need your pitch to us by the 15th of March.
We will review them and then invite the best to the live web debate on the 7th of April. There you get the opportunity to further make your arguments and be quizzed by our panel! On this day you will have 3 mins to present your argument/idea/suggestions, then 10 mins of questions from the Jury.
The jury will score as follows:
• Persuasiveness – how persuasive are you, especially for non-technical.
• Presentation – how engaging or unusual is your presentation (or not boring)
• Innovation – how out the box and extreme is your idea? The more sensational, the better!
• Structure – how well laid out and easy to follow is your argument
• Evidence of research – showing some good technical bases for your arguments, even the most wild of ideas needs a scientific start
The two winners one for, one against, will get a free ticket to the very next Kring meeting in the Netherlands in September. All costs (excursions, hotel, and food) will be covered, but travel costs to and from home are not included. This event is a great opportunity to meet a group of 80-100 experts in the field of coastal engineering in the broadest sense in a very unofficial and pleasant way. So sign up and win!
If you think you are ready for the challenge, (which of course we are sure you are!) please sign up and fill out our contact form (which will soon be available at Kring of Coastal Engineers (coastalkring.eu))
Older than 35? Are you a senior professional? Than get your younger colleagues interested to join in! Especially our young colleagues who might need some encouragement and approval to spend time in this event. So it is you who we need also!
Warm Regards,
Daniel
